For the National Society of Black Engineers 2026 Annual Convention in Baltimore, Baltimore Sound Entertainment brought our giant light-up marquee letters, spelling NSBE, and the crew to haul, build and wire them at the Baltimore Convention Center, plus a second production day at Power Plant Live. NSBE counted more than 13,000 participants downtown that week. Our job was the part nobody sees on the program: getting things built on time and taken down cleanly.

The brief
NSBE’s annual convention is one of the largest gatherings of Black engineers and STEM students in the country. The 2026 edition came to Baltimore under the theme “Advancing S.T.E.M.” and kicked off the society’s 52nd year.
The week packed a lot into one building: professional development workshops, panels, pitch competitions and the NextGen Innovation Expo, NSBE’s reworked career fair. The convention then moved outdoors to the Black on Purpose (BOP) Festival at Power Plant Live, with food, music, art and live tech demos.
An event that size runs on load-in schedules. Convention halls book install windows by the hour, and every vendor shares the same docks and freight elevators. What a convention needs from a local production partner is simple: people who show up on time, know the building and finish inside the window.
What we built
The star of this job was our marquee letters, the big ones: four light-up letters, each taller than the crew putting them up. Everything else was built around getting them in, standing them up and getting them out on the convention’s schedule.
Install day, March 17. The day before the convention opened, a BSE crew worked a 1 to 5 PM shift at the Baltimore Convention Center. Every letter travels wrapped in moving blankets, comes off the van on a hand truck, gets bolted to its base and has its bulbs fitted by hand.

Letter pickup, March 20. On Friday evening, 6 to 8 PM, the crew came back to break the letters down and load them out.

Power Plant Live, March 21. On Saturday, BSE ran a second production from 11 AM to 4 PM at Power Plant Live, the venue NSBE used for its BOP Festival.
The moment that landed
When the last bulb went in and the final letter stood up, the building had a landmark: NSBE, spelled out in lit letters taller than our crew, right where more than 13,000 attendees would walk past it all week. Big letters do one job better than any banner. People stop, and they take a picture.
Why it worked
National conventions bring their own producers, but they still need local hands, and the smart ones hire a local team that can flex between roles.
Our takeaway for planners: book local labor in half-day blocks tied to real milestones, not by the full day. Install, pickup and a second-venue production each got their own block on this job. You pay for the hours you use, and the crew walks in knowing exactly what has to be done before the window closes.
The second lesson is continuity. The same company handled the convention center and Power Plant Live, so nobody had to brief a new vendor on Saturday morning.
FAQ
Can a local production company supply install labor for a national convention?
Yes. Touring producers often bring design and leads but hire install and strike crews locally. A local team already knows the venue’s docks, rules and timing, which saves time in tight load-in windows.
How should you schedule labor for a multi-day convention in Baltimore?
Map every milestone first: install, any mid-week pickups or resets, offsite events and strike. Then book crew in blocks around each one. Half-day shifts work well for focused tasks with a clear finish line.
What do large display letters add to a conference?
They give attendees a branded photo spot and a landmark that is easy to find in a big hall. Plan the placement with foot traffic in mind and schedule pickup as its own task so it does not collide with strike.
Can one vendor cover both the convention center and an offsite event?
Yes, and it reduces risk. One crew that already knows the brand standards and the client’s contacts can move from the hall to an outdoor venue like Power Plant Live without a second round of briefings.
