For the 25th anniversary of September 11, about 750 volunteers filled the Warehouse at Oriole Park at Camden Yards to pack meals for the Baltimore Meal Pack for 9/11 Day, and Baltimore Sound Entertainment ran the DJ, the podium sound and the event photography. It was a day of service, not a party, and the job was to keep a working room moving, keep the remembrance clear, and give every sponsor photos they could use.

The brief
9/11 Day is a nonprofit that turns the anniversary into a national day of service. In 2026 it organized about 50 large-scale volunteer events across the country under the UNITE for Good banner, and Baltimore was one of them.
The format is simple. Volunteers in hairnets work assembly lines, fill meal bags, seal them and stack finished cases in boxes marked “UNITE for good” and “MEALS.” Shifts run back to back, with an event crew setting up early and packers arriving in waves.
That gave us three jobs. Keep the energy up on a floor full of people doing repetitive work for hours. Give the speakers clean, intelligible sound for the remembrance moments. And photograph a long sponsor list so each partner left with images of their own team at work.
The sponsor wall carried UNITE, AmeriCorps, Reliance, Delta, JPMorgan Chase, Stifel, Holland & Knight, Northrop Grumman, U.S. Hunger and Storyline. The Orioles logo sat on the podium and an NFL logo was on a backdrop.
What we built
A DJ on the floor, not on a stage. We put the DJ on the packing floor itself so the music reached the lines where people were working. Volume stayed at a level where table captains could still give instructions without shouting.
A separate speech system. The podium had its own microphone and PA. On a day like this, speeches carry the weight of the event, and the room needs to hear every name and every pause. Keeping the speech audio separate from the DJ rig meant we could cut the music cleanly and bring a speaker up with no fumbling.
Photography built around sponsors. Jeff Lang, BSE co-owner, shot the event on Sony cameras. Beyond the hero shots of the crowd, he built dedicated galleries for Delta, SRS and Nestle, so each partner had a set of its own people packing, smiling and posing with finished cases.
The moment that landed
The Oriole Bird showed up and went straight to work. Seeing the mascot at a packing table, in the middle of a line of volunteers, did more for the room than any announcement could. Phones came out, the lines got louder, and people who had been heads-down for an hour looked up and laughed.
Some volunteers wore orange “Orange & Black Give Back” shirts from the Orioles community program, which made the floor feel like a Baltimore event and not a generic one. Baltimore police leaders also posed with an organizer, a quiet reminder of who the day honors.
By the end of the day, the tables were stacked with packed meals headed to local families.
Why it worked
Our takeaway for planners: treat a volunteer event like a production, not a favor. Volunteer days get budgeted as if the cause will carry the room. It will not. Hundreds of people doing the same task for hours need music that keeps them moving, speeches they can actually hear, and a clear switch between the two.
The second half of that is photography. Sponsors fund these days, and the photos are what they take back to their teams and their annual reports. If you are not shooting a gallery per sponsor, you are leaving your partners with a crowd shot and a guess.
FAQ
Should you have a DJ at a volunteer meal packing event?
Yes. Packing is repetitive, and music keeps the pace up and the mood good across long shifts. Put the DJ on the floor near the lines and keep the volume low enough that table leads can still give directions.
How do you handle sound for speeches at a 750-person volunteer event?
Use a dedicated podium microphone and PA, separate from the DJ setup. That lets you stop the music cleanly and gives speakers clear, intelligible sound across a large, noisy room.
How should you photograph sponsors at a corporate volunteer day?
Build a shot list per sponsor before the day starts. Capture each company’s team working, posing with finished product and in front of the sponsor wall, then deliver those as separate galleries so every partner gets images of their own people.
Can one vendor cover DJ, AV and photography for a day of service?
Yes, and it simplifies the day. One team means one point of contact for the music, the speech audio and the photo schedule, so the program cues and the photo moments line up.
